WOU knocks off Seawolf men, 76-65

ANCHORAGE – Junior Kevin White scored a game-high 19 points, but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team found its offense too late Saturday as it suffered a 76-65 loss to Western Oregon in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

The Seawolves (12-4, 3-2 GNAC) also got 13 points from Donnie Lao and 12 points from Brandon Walker as their 10-game Wells Fargo Sports Complex winning streak came to an end.

The Wolves (9-8, 2-4) were led by 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from power forward Rico Myles. The senior transfer from Division I Morgan State also tied for game-high honors with eight rebounds to help hand UAA its first loss on its primary home court since a 69-54 setback against Western Washington on Feb. 5, 2009.

WOU took control from the outset with a never trailed, forging a 37-28 lead at halftime. UAA cut its deficit to 43-40 on a driving layup by Lao with 13:07 remaining, but the visitors from Monmouth, Ore., answered with six straight points of their own.

Wolves center Kolton Nelson scored two of his 10 points on a layup with 6:18 remaining to make it 60-46, and the Seawolves could not scrape closer than six points despite some clutch long-range three-pointers from White.

White shot 7 of 13 overall and 4 of 9 on treys, tying for game-high honors with four assists as well. The 6-4 guard from Manly, Australia, came two points shy of his career-high performance in the loss.

Western Oregon, which had lost four straight against UAA, shot a blazing 58 percent from the field, while holding the home team to 41 percent. The Seawolves made just 8 of 27 (.296) from long range and 9 of 17 (.529) at the free-throw line.

UAA now hits the road for three straight games, beginning next week at nationally ranked Seattle Pacific (Thur., Jan. 28) and Northwest Nazarene (Sat., Jan. 30).
