UAA falls 3-0 at #15 Seattle Pacific

SEATTLE – Alaska Anchorage got a career-best offensive performance from freshman Robyn Burton, but it was not enough Thursday against the nation's 15th-ranked volleyball team as Seattle Pacific scored a 25-23, 25-23, 25-14 victory over the Seawolves at Royal Brougham Pavilion.

The Seawolves (8-6, 3-3 GNAC) also got eight kills apiece from outside hitters McKenzie Moss and Jackie Matthisen in the loss.

The Falcons (14-0, 6-0 GNAC) were led by 16 kills from Sarah Risser and Paige Hoffman tallied 11 kills and 12 digs as they remained one of just five undefeated teams in NCAA Div. II.

UAA had chances to take the first two sets, leading 17-14 in the first frame before a four-point Falcon run. The Seawolves managed to fend off a pair of set points on consecutive kills from Marie Borowikow and Matthsen, but SPU earned the opener on a kill by Angie Pricco.

The Seawolves led 22-19 in the second set when the Falcons answered with the next five points. Senior middle blocker Cortney Lundberg notched one of her six kills to keep the Seawolves alive, however Hoffman blasted a kill of her own to put the Falcons up 2-0.

After a 4-4 tie in the third set, the Falcons captured 10 of the next 13 points and never looked back.

With the loss, UAA – the defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion – falls three matches behind SPU at the one-third mark of the league schedule. The Falcons were the GNAC runner-up last season and also made the NCAA playoffs.

Burton was the bright spot offensively for UAA on Thursday, equaling her best total with 11 kills and hitting for a personal-best .588 percentage (11 kills-1 error-17 attacks). Sophomore libero Nikkie Viotto led UAA with 13 digs while freshman setter Siobhan Johansen had 24 assists.

The Seawolves travel to take on Montana State Billings (2-12, 2-4 GNAC) in their next match, Saturday at 5 p.m. ADT.
