Burton boosts Seawolves past Crusaders, 3-1

ANCHORAGE – Middle blockers Robyn Burton and Cortney Lundberg both delivered huge performances Saturday to help the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to its third straight victory with a 25-23, 21-25, 25-15, 25-22 defeat of Northwest Nazarene at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (11-6, 6-3 GNAC) also got a 12-kill, 16-dig outing from outside hitter Jackie Matthisen and a big lift off the bench from right-side hitter Shelby Hollister to win for the 13th time in their last 14 home matches.

NNU (5-10, 5-5) was led by eight kills apiece from Haley Abbott, Carly Dranginis and Becky Flores, but the Crusaders could not fight off a big Seawolf comeback in the fourth set.

Burton, a freshman from Chugiak High, had a career-high kills total for the second straight match with 16 spikes, including the first-set clincher.

After NNU took the second set, the UAA dominated the third, getting five kills on six attacks and three blocks from Burton to go up 2-1.

The fourth set would hold more drama as UAA erased a pair of five-point deficits to secure the win. With NNU leading 18-13, Burton ripped a kill and Matthisen followed with two more to keep the home team close.

The Crusaders surged back up 20-17 and led 22-21 on a kill by Flores, but that would their final point. After an NNU service error tied it, Burton took control with back-to-back kills and teamed with Marie Borowikow to block Haley Trautman's attack on match point.

Along with her .375 attack percentage, Burton equaled her career-high in total blocks with 10. Meanwhile, Lundberg hit for a plus-.500 attack percentage for the second match in a row, tallying 12 kills on 23 attacks with zero errors (.522).

Junior outside hitter McKenzie Moss had nine kills and a match-high 19 digs for UAA, while Borowikow had seven kills and five block assists. Hollister, a sophomore from Bend, Ore., filled in for injured regular Lee Golden and came up with career-best numbers of six kills on .312 hitting.

Freshman Siobhan Johansen (35) and sophomore Adriana Aukusitino (23) combined for 58 of UAA's assists, while Johansen added a personal-best 12 digs.

The victory gave UAA its third straight win over NNU and kept the Seawolves tied with Western Oregon (8-6, 6-3) for third place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings. Central Washington also entered the night in a three-way tie for third but dropped behind with a loss at Alaska Fairbanks.

Now at the halfway point of the GNAC season, the Seawolves hit the road for three straight matches, beginning Saturday, Oct. 16 (1 p.m.) at rival UAF.
