Spikers topple Nanooks in Fairbanks, 3-1

FAIRBANKS – Middle blockers Cortney Lundberg and Robyn Burton combined for 27 kills Saturday to lead the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to its fourth straight victory, knocking off host Alaska Fairbanks 25-21, 22-25, 25-15, 25-19 at the Patty Center.

The Seawolves (12-6, 7-3 GNAC) also got nine kills from outside hitter Lee Golden as they avenged a 3-1 loss to UAF last month in Anchorage.

The Nanooks (5-11, 3-7) were led by 11 kills from outside hitter Simone Chavous, but the Seawolves held UAF standout Tereza Bendlova to just eight kills and a negative hitting percentage of -.032.

Lundberg, a senior from Hardin, Mont., finished with 14 kills and four blocks, hitting over .500 for the third straight match (.520, 14-1-25). Meanwhile, Burton, a freshman from Chugiak, had 13 kills, four blocks and hit an impressive .423 to continue her hot streak.

After being tied 19-19 in the first set, UAA got back-to-back kills from Lundberg and Nikkie Viotto to start a 4-0 run. Viotto, who was filling in at outside hitter for an injured McKenzie Moss (ankle), delivered again on set point.

The Nanooks battled back to take the second set before the Seawolves dominated the third, earning a 12-4 lead and never looking back.

UAF threatened to make it a 5-setter with a 12-8 lead in the fourth set, but UAA got a kill from Golden to start a 7-0 spurt, and the visitors would not trail again. Golden, a junior from Pembroke Pines, Fla., put the match away with the final two kills of the day.

Freshman Quincy Haught, who took over for Viotto at the libero position, made a match-high 15 digs, while setters Adriana Aukusitino and Siobhan Johansen combined for 48 assists and 16 digs. Sophomore Shelby Hollister had a career-high seven kills, and fellow outside hitter Marie Borowikow tallied five kills on errorless hitting and a match-best six block assists.

The Seawolves have now won three of their last four matches against the Nanooks, including two straight in Fairbanks.

Up next for UAA is a huge showdown with GNAC co-leader and 16th-ranked Western Washington (12-2, 9-1) on Thursday in Bellingham. The Seawolves handed the Vikings their only GNAC loss thus far, 3-1, on Sept. 25 in Anchorage.
