Spikers dominate at MSU Billings

BILLINGS, Mont. – Jackie Matthisen ripped 14 kills and fellow outside hitter McKenzie Moss had an errorless performance Saturday to lead the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-22, 25-13, 25-19 win over Montana State Billings at Alterowitz Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (9-6, 4-3 GNAC) also got 38 combined assists from setters Siobhan Johansen and Adriana Aukusitino as they recorded the third-best attack percentage by a Great Northwest Athletic Conference team this year, out-hitting their hosts .363 to .076.

The Yellowjackets (2-13, 2-5) were led by 13 kills from Jennifer Boe, who had more than half of her team's 25 kills.

With the win, UAA avenged its only two GNAC losses from 2009 and gave head coach Chris Green his 500th career victory. Green now holds a 47-28 record midway through his third season at UAA, following nine seasons at Western Nebraska Community College in which he went 453-55.

Despite grabbing an early 9-3 lead out of the gate, the Seawolves had to repel a late Yellowjacket charge in the first set. Boe gave MSUB a 21-20 lead with an ace before UAA responded with five of the last six rallies, including an ace by Moss on set point.

After leading just 8-7 in the second, the Seawolves pulled away with a 16-4 run and led throughout the final set as well. UAA recorded attack percentages of .387 and .458 in the second and third sets, respectively, boosted by career-bests of .478 (14 kills-3 errors-23 attacks) from Matthisen and .643 (9-0-14) from Moss.

Sophomore libero Nikkie Viotto paced UAA with nine digs, while Montana native Cortney Lundberg contributed on half of the Seawolves' 10 blocks, including two solos.

Junior right-side hitter Lee Golden tallied six kills, freshman middle blocker Robyn Burton had five kills and Lundberg tallied four.

The Seawolves return home to the Wells Fargo Sports Complex next week for crucial conference contests against Central Washington (Thur., Oct. 7) and Northwest Nazarene (Sat., Oct. 9). Both matches start at 7 p.m.
