Vikings swamp Seawolves in Bellingham

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Emily Jepsen smashed 13 kills without an error Thursday to lead nationally 17th-ranked Western Washington to a 25-13, 25-11, 25-10 sweep of Alaska Anchorage in a key West Region volleyball match at Carver Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (12-7, 7-4 GNAC) had their four-match winning streak stopped as no UAA player managed more than six kills in the team's worst loss of the season. UAA entered the match at No. 8 in the newly released regional rankings, while WWU (14-2, 11-1) – the Great Northwest Athletic Conference co-leader – came in at No. 3 regionally.

Junior outside hitter Jackie Matthisen had six kills for the Seawolves, while freshman middle blocker Robyn Burton tallied four kills and two block assists, but the hosts dominated every facet of the contest in avenging their only GNAC loss thus far, a 3-1 setback in Anchorage last month.

The Vikings out-hit the Seawolves .416 to .044, out-aced them 9-3 and won the blocking battle by a 6-2 count. UAA entered the match as the top blocking team in NCAA Division II with 2.68 blocks per set.

WWU's victory also snapped a three-match losing streak against the Seawolves.

UAA will try to get back on track Saturday when it makes its inaugural appearance at GNAC newcomer Simon Fraser in Burnaby, British Columbia. That match begins at 6 p.m. ADT and can be followed via live stats at GoSeawolves.com.
