Spikers deliver victory in Canada

BURNABY, British Columbia – Jackie Matthisen blasted 11 kills and sophomore Leah McWilliams delivered a career-best offensive performance Saturday to lead the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-17, 25-20, 25-16 sweep of Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (13-7, 8-4 GNAC) retook sole possession of third place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings by out-hitting their hosts .297 to .058.

The Clan (4-14, 4-10) was led by eight kills and nine digs from outside hitter Kelsey Robinson.

UAA, ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Div. II West Region, trailed by no more than two points all night and scored the last six points of the match to win for the fifth time in six outings.

Matthisen, a junior outside hitter from East Anchorage High School, hit for a .304 attack percentage, while freshman libero Quincy Haught had a match-best 13 digs and a pair of aces.

Meanwhile, McWilliams had a banner night as the Texan delivered a career-high nine kills on just 14 attempts, finishing with a .500 attack percentage. Normally a middle blocker, McWilliams filled in for injured starting outside hitter McKenzie Moss, who missed her third straight match with a lower-leg injury.

Senior Cortney Lundberg, freshman Robyn Burton and junior Lee Golden accounted for five kills apiece, and sophomore Marie Borowikow had four kills on just eight attacks. Burton, who ranks fourth in the nation in blocking, delivered four stuffs, including one solo.

UAA will play four of its final six matches at home, beginning with Thursday's 7 p.m. contest against Montana State Billings.
