Seawolves upset #13 Falcons, 3-1

ANCHORAGE – Junior Jackie Matthisen had a team-season-high 20 kills Saturday and senior Cortney Lundberg notched a big performance to lead the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-22, 16-25, 25-23, 25-20 upset of nationally 13th-ranked Seattle Pacific at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (15-7, 10-4 GNAC) also got 18 digs from freshman libero Quincy Haught as they won their third straight and improved their chances for an NCAA playoff berth. UAA came in ranked No. 8 in the West Region while SPU (21-2, 13-2) entered at No. 2.

The Falcons, who had won 63 of 72 sets coming into Saturday, were knocked out of first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with the loss. SPU was led by 19 kills on .571 hitting from freshman Nikki Lowell and a match-high 25 digs from libero Anna Herold.

UAA took a 22-19 edge in the first set before Paige Hoffman (11 kills, 13 digs) capped a tying three-point run for the visitors with a kill. The Seawolves responded with the final three points, however, getting consecutive kills from Lundberg and Matthisen, who then combined on the set-clinching block against Hoffman.

SPU evened the match when it pulled away from a 17-16 lead to score the final eight points of the second set, and the Falcons looked in position to take Set 3 with a 20-16 lead in that frame.

But Matthisen, an outside hitter from East Anchorage High School, sparked a Seawolf rally with a kill and SPU committed back-to-back attack errors to let UAA back into it. Despite falling behind 22-19, the Seawolves surged ahead with six of the final seven rallies, including three kills from Matthisen.

SPU, which also got double-digit kills from Sarah Risser (17) and Lindsey Wodrich (12), took an early 11-9 in the fourth set before UAA took over. Matthisen served four straight points to give the Seawolves the lead, and SPU would get within one point only one more time, at 14-13. With a 22-20 advantage, the Seawolves closed the match appropriately with consecutive kills from Matthisen and an emphatic spike from Lundberg.

Lundberg, a 6-1 middle blocker, finished with 11 kills on .391 hitting and had three solos among her six total blocks. Junior right-side hitter Lee Golden (8 kills, .300 attack pct.), sophomore right-side hitter Marie Borowikow (5 kills, 5 block assists) and sophomore outside hitter Shelby Hollister (3 kills on 5 attempts) were the other offensive heroes for the Seawolves.

Matthisen, who had four more kills than any other Seawolf this year, also finished with 10 digs to record her team-best sixth double-double. Freshman middle blocker Robyn Burton contributed six total blocks in the victory.

The Seawolves go on the road for the final time in the regular season next week with matches at Northwest Nazarene on Thursday, Nov. 4, and Central Washington on Saturday, Nov. 6.

The regular season ends with home matches against Saint Martin's (Nov. 11) and Western Oregon (Nov. 13).
