Seawolves cool off Wildcats, 3-1

ANCHORAGE – Outside hitter Jackie Matthisen slammed a season-high 16 kills and the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team also got big nights from middle blockers Robyn Burton and Cortney Lundberg to stop Central Washington, 25-21, 25-18, 12-25, 25-22 in a crucial league showdown at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Thursday.

With the victory, the Seawolves (10-6, 5-3 GNAC) move into a three-way tie for third place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with CWU (7-6, 5-3) and idle Western Oregon.

UAA also snapped Central's five-match winning streak despite a match-high 22 kills from Wildcat outside hitter Kady Try. Outside hitter Meg Ryan had 12 kills and 11 digs for CWU, which had won 15 straight sets before Thursday.

Matthisen, a junior from Anchorage's East High, continued her hot offensive play of late, hitting .345 (16 kills-6 errors-29 attacks) and coming up with eight digs. Her kills total matched a UAA season-high as well.

Meanwhile, Burton blasted a career-high 13 kills on .375 hitting and matched her career-high with nine blocks assists, and Lundberg hit .562 (9-0-16) and contributed on four of UAA's 13 team blocks.

The Seawolves never trailed in the first set before having to come back from a 5-0 deficit in the second frame. Lee Golden, a junior right-side hitter, gave UAA its first lead with one of her eight kills to make it 16-15, and the Seawolves would pull away for a two-sets-to-none lead.

But after scoring the first two points of set 3, UAA could not stop the visitors from Ellensburg, Wash., as the Wildcats handed the Seawolves their worst single-set loss of the season at 25-12.

UAA appeared to make a complete recovery in the fourth, cruising to an 18-10 advantage before a big CWU comeback. The Wildcats pulled within 19-17 on an attack error by Burton and sliced it to 22-21 on Kristel Baeckel's service ace. The Seawolves responded, however, when Golden rocketed a kill into the back corner and then combined with Lundberg to block a Ryan attack, making it match point. Lundberg sealed the victory with a kill two points later.

Sophomore libero Nikkie Viotto led UAA with 18 digs and freshman Siobhan Johansen had 25 assists as the Seawolves used all three of their setters. Junior setter Maddie Ogden saw her most extensive playing time of the season and had 17 assists, while sophomore outside hitter Marie Borowikow matched her career-high with seven block assists.

The Seawolves go for their third straight win Saturday when they host Northwest Nazarene in another league match at the WFSC. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
