Seawolves survive scrappy Saints, 3-1

ANCHORAGE – Robyn Burton and Marie Borowikow tallied nine kills apiece Thursday to lead a balanced Alaska Anchorage offensive effort in a 25-16, 25-19, 24-26, 25-11 volleyball victory over Saint Martin's at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (17-8, 12-5 GNAC) also got 26 assists and 12 digs from freshman setter Siobhan Johansen as they defended their No. 7 West Region ranking in their chase for the NCAA Tournament.

Kirstyn Druzianich had a match-high 12 kills for the Saints (2-21, 1-16 GNAC), who managed to take a set from the Seawolves for the first time since 2007.

Senior middle blocker Cortney Lundberg had eight kills and a match-high five block assists, while junior outside hitter Jackie Matthisen added eight kills and a career-high four aces. Juniors Lee Golden and McKenzie Moss finished with six kills apiece.

After struggling in their third-set loss, the Seawolves responded by out-hitting the visitors from Lacey, Wash., .441 to .000 in the fourth and final frame.

Freshman libero Quincy Haught lifted 18 digs – one shy of her career-best – and Moss made 15 digs and a pair of aces. Junior defensive specialist Nikkie Viotto delivered 14 digs and three aces.

The Seawolves conclude the regular season Saturday when they take on Western Oregon (14-8, 12-5) in a battle for third place in the final Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings. A UAA victory would avenge a September road loss to the Wolves and likely clinch UAA's second consecutive NCAA berth.
