ANAHEIM, Calif. – Senior Nikki Aden scored 18
points and juniors Hanna Johansson and Kaylie Robison delivered double-doubles
Friday to lift the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 74-62 victory
over UC San Diego in a battle of nationally ranked teams at Disney's Div. II
Tip-Off Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.
The Seawolves, ranked No. 13 in the preseason Division II top-25 poll, got 16
points and 10 rebounds from Johansson and 10 points and 10 rebounds from Robison
to fight off a late charge from the 11
th-ranked Tritons in the
season-opener for both clubs.
Guards Emily Osga (20 points, 4 assists) and Daisy Feder (21 points, 6-10 3FG)
had big offensive nights for UCSD, but the Seawolves held All-America junior
guard Chelsea Carlisle in check, holding her to six points on 3-of-10 shooting,
just one assist and six turnovers.
Rebounding was the story of the night as the Seawolves
nearly doubled up the Tritons on the boards, 51-26, including a career-high
tying eight by Aden and a career-best eight from sophomore forward Alysa Horn.
Horn, who made her first career start, also finished with a
career-high-tying seven points as the sophomore from Kodiak shot 3-of-6 from the
field.
The first half was tight throughout, featuring six ties and six lead changes.
UCSD led 23-21 at the 4-minute mark when the Seawolves went on a 10-0 run,
sparked by one of Aden's three three-pointers.
After taking a 31-25 edge at intermission, the Seawolves quickly found
themselves tied when Feder swished a pair of treys in the first minute of the
second half. UAA responded with a 7-0 run, however, and held the lead for the
rest of the night.
Aden (5-11 FG, 3-6 3FG, 5-6 FT) nailed another three-pointer to give the
Seawolves their largest lead, 52-37, with 10 minutes to play.
The Tritons, from just down the road in La Jolla, Calif., would not go quietly
though, cutting their deficit to just four points twice with under five minutes
left. Horn then grabbed an offensive rebound and swished a short turnaround
jumper, followed by a straightaway 17-footer by Johansson to extend the lead.
With a 61-55 advantage at the 2-minute mark, Robison snagged an offensive
rebound, scored the putback and was fouled, completing a three-point play that
proved to be the clincher.
Robison, a 6-0 junior transfer from the College of Eastern Utah, grabbed six of
her 10 rebounds on the offensive end and added a blocked shot.
Meanwhile, Johansson started her junior season with a bang, making 7-of-10 from
the field and 2-of-3 at the charity stripe. Her double-double was the second of
her career.
Newcomers Tanee' Denson-Griffin and Sasha King accounted for seven points
apiece, while senior point guard Kaitlin McBride had five points. King, a point
guard from Norman, Okla., and Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, had
team-highs of three assists and three steals as well.
The Seawolves entered the game as the second-place choice in the Great
Northwest Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll, while the Tritons came
in as the favorites to win their fifth straight California Collegiate Athletic
Association title.
UAA gets no time to rest as it must prepare for Pacific West Conference
favorite Grand Canyon (1-0), a 76-69 winner over Texas Woman's University in
Friday's other women's game. The Seawolves and 'Lopes will tip off at 11 a.m.
AST Saturday.
