Women lose 2OT heartbreaker at Disney

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Hanna Johansson scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds but the nationally 13th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team could not get the key shots to fall Sunday, suffering a 79-73 double-overtime loss to Texas Woman's University at Disney's Tip-Off Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The Seawolves (2-1) also got eight points apiece from Sarah Herrin, Sasha King and Kaylie Robison, plus seven points each from Nikki Aden and Alysa Horn.

The Pioneers (2-1), from Denton, Texas, and the Lone Star Conference, were led by 21 points from senior guard Jessica Hanna and 18 points from guard Brooke Shepherd in the knock-down, drag-out affair.

Despite the loss, the Seawolves still emerged as champions of the four-team, round-robin tournament. Both UAA, TWU and Grand Canyon wound up with 2-1 records after GCU knocked off 11th-ranked UC San Diego 120-118 in triple overtime in the late game. UAA won the tie-breaker with a plus-2 point differential in its games against GCU (minus-1) and TWU (minus-1).

TWU started the game with an 8-0 run but would never lead by that many again as the UAA pulled within 33-29 at halftime.

The Seawolves forged their first tie when Horn sank a three-pointer to make it 41-41 at the 16:42 mark of the second half. Three minutes later, Herrin sank the first of two quick three-pointers to put UAA up 47-46, and neither team would lead by more than four points for the rest of regulation.

Hanna gave the Pioneers a 61-57 lead with a pair of free throws at the 4:20 mark, but the Seawolf defense would hold them without a point until the regulation buzzer. Johansson sank a layup and fellow post player Robison made two free throws to account for a 61-61 tie. UAA missed a chance to get the win when point guard Kaitlin McBride missed a pull-up, baseline jumper with five seconds left.

After UAA took its largest lead of the game at 69-64 in the first overtime, Hanna nailed a wide-open three-pointer and teammate Kayla Weaver (14 points, 9 rebounds) got free for a layup moments later to tie it at 69 apiece.

Tied at 73-73 in the second overtime, TWU's Jeanee' Thompson sank the go-ahead basket with 1:43 left, and the Seawolves would not score again. Herrin had a chance to tie on a three-point attempt with 20 seconds remaining that bounced off the rim and fell into the hands of Weaver.

The loss was just UAA's fourth in the last five seasons against a non-conference Division II opponent in the regular season.

The Seawolves return home for a pair of games against New Mexico Highlands in their Wells Fargo Sports Complex debut, Nov. 19-20, before hosting the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout Nov. 23-24 at Sullivan Arena.
