#12 UAA hands Dixie first loss

ANCHORAGE – Alysa Horn poured in a career-high 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Saturday to lead host Alaska Anchorage to a 68-53 women's basketball victory over previously unbeaten Dixie State in the final game of the 2010 AT&T Hoops Classic at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The 12th-ranked Seawolves (8-2) also got 15 points, six assists, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks from junior center Hanna Johansson – who was named the Classic's Most Outstanding Player – to capture a key win against a fellow NCAA Division II West Region contender.

The Red Storm (8-1) was led by 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting from sophomore guard Chanel Maxey, but the rest of her teammates combined to make just 10 of 47 shots (21.3 percent) from the floor.

“Our intensity at the beginning was the key for us tonight,” said UAA coach Tim Moser, who has now won 70 of 74 home games in his five seasons at the helm. “Alysa and Hanna were both huge for us on the offensive end, and defensively we shut down one of the most talented teams in the West Region.”

Horn, a sophomore from Kodiak, tallied a career-high point total on 7-of-13 shooting (3-5 3FGs) and equaled her career-high in rebounds. The 6-0 forward propelled the Seawolves to a hot start against the visitors from St. George, Utah, pushing the lead to 36-12 on her three-pointer with 4:20 left in the first half.

The Pacific West Conference club would not go away, however, making an 11-2 run to close the half with only a 38-23 deficit. Dixie State would slice UAA's lead to 10 points three times in the second half but could never get within single digits.

Seawolf senior guard Nikki Aden was another key factor in UAA's game-opening blitz as the Portland, Ore., native recorded 13 points, four assists and three steals. Aden was named to the All-Classic Team along with Horn and Johansson.

Maxey and Dixie teammate Breann Hill also made the All-Classic Team, despite Hill's absence in the second half Saturday. The senior forward had six points (3-6 FG), three rebounds and two steals in the first half before going down hard and suffering a head injury on a successful layup with 3:50 on the clock.

On the defensive end, UAA held Dixie standout forward Johnna Brown – who came in averaging 16.8 points per game – to just six points on 2-of-12 shooting, and forced the Red Storm into 25 turnovers. The final score marked the seventh straight game that UAA has held its opponent to 53 or fewer points.

The Seawolves return to the court for their final two non-conference games on Dec. 17-18, when they host a pair of West Region games against Chaminade, which also hails from the Pac West Conference. Friday's contest starts at 7 p.m. and Saturday's at 3 p.m. at the WFSC.
