Mavericks dismantle Seawolves, 5-2

MANKATO, Minn. - The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves gave up three special team goals, falling to the Minnesota State Mavericks, 5-2, in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game at the Verizon Wireless Center on Friday night.

The Seawolves (10-17-2, 8-14-2 WCHA) took an early 1-0 lead with just 49 seconds expired on the clock, and held the lead through the first period. The Mavericks (13-16-2, 7-15-1 WCHA) responded with three goals in the second and two in the third before UAA netted a power play tally for the 5-2 final.

After missing three games due to a hip injury, junior forward Nick Haddad returned to the lineup tonight for his fifth goal of the season. Haddad received the puck from senior forwards Kevin Clark and Josh Lunden.

Minnesota State's five-goal run included two breakaway goals and two shorthanded tallies. Handing UAA most of the destruction was senior forward Kael Mouillierat, who registered two goals and an assist.

The Seawolves final tally of the night was netted by freshman forward Alex Gettert - his third goal of the season and second goal on the man advantage. Assisting on the play was junior defensemen Luka Vidmar and Kane Lafranchise.

In net for UAA, senior Jon Olthuis stopped 20 of MSU's 25 shots, while the Mavericks' Phil Cook (5-3-1) made 28 saves on 30 shots. With the loss, Olthuis drops his record to 7-11-2 on the season.

Both teams made multiple trips to the penalty box, with UAA serving 10-20 and MSU tagged for 13-26. The Seawolves were 1-8 on the power play and the Mavericks were 1-5.

In the league standings, UAA falls to No. 8 with 18 points after the Minnesota Gophers grabbed the two points over Colorado College for the sole ownership of No. 7 with 20 points. Minnesota State continues to trail UAA at No. 9 with 15 points.
