Yellowjackets sting Seawolves, 65-60

BILLINGS, Mont. – Juniors Brandon Walker and Kevin White scored 14 points apiece but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team could not overcome a hot-shooting Montana State Billings squad in a 65-60 loss Saturday at Alterowitz Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (16-9, 7-7 GNAC) also got 12 points from Casey Robinson, but the junior forward's attempt at a game-tying three-pointer went wide with 6 seconds left.

The Yellowjackets (14-9, 8-6) were led by 16 points and seven assists from point guard DaVell Jackson as the home team took sole possession of fourth place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings.

The loss knocked UAA into fifth place and dealt a tough blow to its playoff chances as the Seawolves entered the night ranked No. 9 in the NCAA Div. II West Region. The top eight teams will make the NCAA Tournament and just two games remain for the Seawolves – at home Thursday against Northwest Nazarene, and Mar. 6 against regionally top-ranked Seattle Pacific.

Saturday's contest was tight throughout, with UAA gaining its largest lead at 19-10 midway through the first half. The Seawolves led 29-28 at halftime and trailed just 41-40 with less than 9 minutes left when the Yellowjackets started their run.

Left wide open on the left side of the three-point arc, White – who had already made four three-pointers – missed his attempt, and MSUB responded seconds later with a successful trey by Lasha Parghalava.

That six-point swing would turn out to be costly as the Seawolves eventually fell behind 59-50 with 3 minutes remaining and had to turn to fouling down the stretch. The strategy almost worked when DeAndre Chambers missed two free throws with 14 seconds remaining. Donnie Lao grabbed the rebound and dished ahead to Robinson, but the Seawolves' second-leading scorer was forced to double-clutch before attempting an off-balance trey. The rebound went to Jackson, who clinched the game with two free throws.

Jackson shot 5 of 6 from the field to lead his team to 57 percent marksmanship – including 5-of-10 three-pointers – in the second half.

The Seawolves were hot from three-point land themselves at 13 of 28 (.464), however UAA struggled from close range, making only 6 of 19 (.316) inside the arc.

White led the Seawolves with six rebounds, while freshman Bryce Arnott dished a team-best three assists.
