Seawolves dominate Saints in Lacey

LACEY, Wash. – Lee Golden and Robyn Burton both had career-best offensive showings Saturday to lead the 23rd-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-12, 25-23, 25-18 victory over Saint Martin's at Marcus Pavilion.

The Seawolves (6-4, 1-1 GNAC) also got 36 assists from freshman Siobhan Johansen and a match-best 15 digs from junior outside hitter Jackie Matthisen to earn their initial Great Northwest Athletic Conference win of the year.

The Saints (0-7, 0-2) were led by 10 kills and nine digs from Malia Ibarra.

Golden, a junior right-side hitter, had 14 kills on .600 hitting as UAA used dominant efforts in the first and third sets. The Saints made the Seawolves sweat in the second set, pulling within 23-22, before middle blocker Leah McWilliams (4 kills, .400 attack pct., 4 blocks) put away an SMU overpass, and right-side hitter Marie Borowikow (8 kills, .467, 3 blocks) smashed a kill on set point.

Burton, meanwhile, accounted for 11 kills on .500 hitting as the freshman middle blocker from Chugiak helped the Seawolves snap a two-match losing streak.

The Seawolf defense was balanced, with Nikkie Viotto (12 digs), McKenzie Moss (10) and Quincy Haught (10) joining Matthisen with double-digit digs.

UAA hit for a season-high .353 percentage as a team, outblocked the Saints 8-3 and outdug them 57-42.

Saturday's match completed a stretch of eight matches in nine days – all away from home – for the Seawolves. UAA gets a break in the schedule this week, however, getting six days off before hosting rival Alaska Fairbanks on Sat., Sept. 18 (7 p.m. ADT) at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
