Nanooks shock Seawolves, 3-1

ANCHORAGE – Alaska Fairbanks outside hitter Tereza Bendlova had 19 kills and 14 digs Saturday to lead her team to a 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 25-23 upset of host Alaska Anchorage at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The host Seawolves (6-5, 1-2 GNAC) were led by 13 kills from outside hitter McKenzie Moss as they lost their Great Northwest Athletic Conference home opener and saw their nine-match home winning streak come to an end.

The Nanooks (4-5, 2-1) also got a combined 20 kills from Simone Chavous and Karlee Skalla to knock off the defending GNAC champs. UAA – picked No. 2 in the league's preseason coaches' poll – has now suffered as many GNAC losses as it did all of last season.

Despite holding a 20-18 lead in the first set, UAA was foiled by six service errors and allowed a late 5-0 run to fall behind early. The Seawolves seemed to regain their composure in the second set, erasing an early 7-2 deficit and using four kills apiece from Moss and freshman Robyn Burton to even the match.

UAA led 10-8 in the third set when the Nanooks called a timeout and promptly won 10 of the next 12 rallies. Bendlova had five kills on seven attacks in that frame to put her team up 2-1.

Then in the fourth set, the Seawolves appeared to be on the verge of sending it the distance with a 23-20 lead. But the visitors would stun the crowd of 759 – the fifth-largest in UAA history – as Wikander and Bendlova led a match-ending, five-point surge, notching a kill apiece and combining to block Burton on match point.

Burton, Marie Borowikow and Lee Golden had eight kills apiece for UAA, while outside hitter Jackie Matthisen had nine kills and 10 digs. Sophomore libero Nikkie Viotto lifted a match-high 15 digs and Seawolf setters Siobhan Johansen (25) and Adriana Aukusitino (18) combined for 43 assists. Senior middle blocker Cortney Lundberg returned to the UAA lineup after missing the last eight matches with an ankle sprain, posting seven total blocks, including two solos.

The Seawolves return to the court Thursday, Sept. 23, when they host GNAC newcomer Simon Fraser in a 7 p.m. contest at the WFSC.
