#8 Tritons edge #24 Seawolves in 5 sets

INDEPENDENCE, Ore. – Juniors McKenzie Moss and Jackie Matthisen combined for 31 kills but a valiant comeback effort fell short Friday for the 24th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team in a 3-2 loss to 8th-ranked UC San Diego at the Phoenix Inn GNAC Conference Challenge.

Moss notched a match-high 16 kills while Matthisen had 15 kills and 16 digs for her second straight double-double for UAA (2-1).

UCSD (1-0) got 13 kills apiece from Roxanne Brunsting and Hillary Williamson as the Tritons prevailed 25-15, 25-23, 24-26, 22-25, 15-12 in the contest held at Central High School.

The Seawolves struggled in the first two sets without senior middle blocker Cortney Lundberg, last year's Great Northwest Athletic Conference blocks leader, who was injured in practice earlier in the week.

Trailing 14-9 in the third set, UAA found its game and tied it 15-15 on back-to-back kills by sophomore Marie Borowikow (6 kills, career-high 8 total blocks) and Matthisen (.314 attack pct.). The Tritons earned match point at 24-23 on a kill by Katie Condon (12 kills, 10 digs), but UAA tied it on a kill from Matthisen and took the set on consecutive attack errors by UCSD.

The Tritons jumped to a 17-12 lead in the fourth set before UAA produced another late rally. Tied 20-20, the Seawolves got a kill from Moss and an ace from freshman setter Siobhan Johansen (23 assists, 2 aces). UAA wrapped up the set when Borowikow teamed with freshman Robyn Burton (8 block assists) to stuff Condon at the net, and then notched a solo block against Condon.

The fifth set was tight throughout, seeing nine tie scores before UCSD took the lead for good at 12-11 when Brunsting and Kaitlin Potter combined to block Burton. Burton and Borowikow teamed up on a block a few moments later to keep UAA within a point at 13-12, but the Tritons clinched it on consecutive kills from Brunsting and Janessa Werhane.

UAA outblocked the Tritons 14-7 and out-hit them .237 to .184, but the Seawolves had a rough day with the service game, allowing 13 aces and tallying only two of their own.

Junior outside hitter Lee Golden had 10 kills for UAA, while sophomore setter Adriana Aukusitino had 26 assists.

The Seawolves return to the court at 4 p.m. ADT to face 10th-ranked Metro State (0-1), which was swept by fellow GNAC member Western Washington in another early Friday match.
