Seawolves stun #2 Coyotes, 3-0

INDEPENDENCE, Ore. – The 24th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team pulled off one of the biggest upsets in school history Saturday, roaring to a 3-0 victory over 2nd-ranked Cal State-San Bernardino at the Phoenix Inn GNAC Conference Challenge.

Junior outside hitter McKenzie Moss continued her outstanding play with a match-high 16 kills and sophomore right-side hitter Marie Borowikow tallied nine kills and four block assists as UAA (3-2) prevailed 25-20, 25-20, 25-23 at Central High School.

Middle blocker Rachel Taylor led CSUSB (2-1) with eight kills on .389 hitting, but the Seawolves held All-American outside hitter Jane Chafeh to just four kills and a .000 attack percentage.

”It was a great team performance,” said UAA head coach Chris Green. “Our ball control was much better. Our main passers – McKenzie, Jackie (Matthisen), Quincy (Haught) and Nikkie (Viotto) – all did a great job. We put all facets of the game together and played pretty well throughout the match.”

The victory avenged a loss to the Coyotes in last year's NCAA West Regional semifinals and marked CSUSB's first regular-season, non-conference loss since 2007. It was also the first time the Coyotes had suffered a sweep since losing at Cal Poly Pomona on Oct. 29, 2008.

The Seawolves led from start-to-finish in the first set and trailed 18-17 in the second set when they used a 6-0 run to take control. Freshman middle blocker Robyn Burton (4 block assists) had two of her four kills, including set point, in the deciding surge.

UAA led for much of the third set and seemed to have things in control at 21-17 when the Coyotes made a final run. Priscilla Collings notched an ace to draw CSUSB within 24-23, but Moss answered with her final kill on a feed from freshman setter Siobhan Johansen (22 assists) to set off a Seawolf celebration.

All-conference outside hitter Jackie Matthisen had just six kills but led the Seawolves with nine digs, while right-side hitter Lee Golden ripped seven kills on .600 hitting (7 kills-1 error-10 attempts).

UAA out-hit the four-time defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champions .283 to .184.

The Seawolves complete play at the Challenge with a 4 p.m. match today against another CCAA school, Humboldt State. That match will be played on the main court at Western Oregon University's New P.E. Building in Monmouth.
