#24 UAA overcomes Humboldt in 5

MONMOUTH, Ore. – McKenzie Moss notched a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs as the 24th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team capped a successful Saturday with a 3-2 victory over Humboldt State in its final match at the Phoenix Inn GNAC Conference Challenge at the New P.E. Building.

The Seawolves (4-2) also got 23 digs from junior Jackie Matthisen and 20 digs from sophomore Nikkie Viotto – both career-highs – to fight off the upset bid, 24-26, 25-20, 25-15, 19-25, 15-6.

The Lumberjacks (0-4) were led by 11 kills and 14 digs from outside hitter Oceana Matsubu and 20 digs from libero Brooke Ferguson.

UAA had a chance to take an early edge with a 23-20 lead and a set point at 24-23 in the first set, but HSU got a kill from Matsubu to start a three-point surge and grab the early advantage.

Leading 18-17 in the second set, the Seawolves, who got a career-high 11 kills on .333 hitting from freshman Robyn Burton, finished with a 7-3 run to even the match.

UAA dominated the third set but fell behind early in the fourth and got no closer than within 15-13 in that frame.

The fifth set was a runaway for UAA, however, as freshman setter Siobhan Johansen (19 assists) served the first five points, tallying an ace and dishing two assists to Moss in that blitz. Moss made it 10-3 when she saved a ball from near the back wall of the gym and lofted it over the net where it dropped in between three surprised Lumberjacks.

UAA, which had swept 2nd-ranked Cal State-San Bernardino earlier in the day, got a lift from sophomore middle blocker Leah McWilliams in the late match. Filling in for injured starter Cortney Lundberg, McWilliams earned career-highs of five kills and seven total blocks against HSU.

Sophomore Adriana Aukusitino led UAA with 25 assists and a career-high 12 digs, while junior outside hitter Lee Golden notched nine kills and Matthisen had eight.

The Seawolves stay on the road this week for their final non-conference matches, playing Monday night at Dominican University in San Rafael, Calif., and Tuesday at San Francisco State. Both contests start at 6 p.m. ADT.
