Women bounce back against Clan

ANCHORAGE – Alysa Horn scored 12 points to lead a balanced Alaska Anchorage scoring effort as the 15th-ranked Seawolves earned a 65-52 women's basketball victory over Simon Fraser at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

UAA (15-4, 6-2 GNAC) also got a 9-point, 10-rebound performance off the bench from junior center Kaylie Robison to stay perfect in nine games at the WFSC this year.

SFU (3-9, 0-7), making its first trip to Anchorage as a member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, was led by 12 points and four assists from sophomore guard Carla Wyman.

The Seawolves won the rebounding battle 48-33 – including 25 offensive boards – to outscore the Clan 21-2 in second-chance points. UAA also forced 27 turnovers and held the league's leading scorer (20.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.0 rpg), sophomore forward Nayo Raincock Ekunwe, under her averages with 10 points and nine caroms.

Coming off a tough road loss at Saint Martin's on Saturday, the Seawolves never trailed against the GNAC newcomers from Burnaby, British Columbia, although it was just a 36-28 edge at halftime.

Robison, a 6-footer from Sandy, Utah, did the majority of her damage in the first 20 minutes, and dished two of her career-high three assists in the second half. UAA saw its lead cut to 40-34 at the 16-minute mark, but then used a 13-0 run over the next seven and a half minutes to take control. The Seawolves led 65-42 with three minutes remaining before the Clan scored the last 10 points.

Junior center Hanna Johansson had 11 points and five rebounds to stretch her double-digit scoring streak to 17 games, while senior guard Nikki Aden had nine points and junior guard Tanee' Denson-Griffin eight points and six rebounds.

The win was a historic one for the Seawolves as Aden, from Portland, Ore., became the all-time victories leader in program history, surpassing former teammate Rebecca Kielpinski (2005-09) with her 98th triumph in Green & Gold.

The victory also leaves UAA alone in second place in the GNAC as it prepares for a Saturday (5:15 p.m.) showdown against league-leading and 10th-ranked Western Washington.
