Horn helps Seawolves repel 'Jackets

ANCHORAGE – Alysa Horn had 21 points and seven rebounds Saturday to help the 17th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team fend off a strong challenge from Montana State Billings for a 62-48 victory at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (17-5, 8-3 GNAC) also got a breakout game from junior guard Francesca De Angelis, who scored 14 points and snagged four rebounds.

The Yellowjackets (10-9, 6-5) were led by 17 points from senior guard Jenny Heringer, plus 11 points and four assists from reserve forward Beata Bak, but could not keep up their hot shooting from the first half..

MSUB shot 50 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes to stay within 31-27 at halftime, however UAA's defense was stifling in the second half, holding the Yellowjackets to just 26 percent (7 of 27) from the field. For the game, UAA also owned a huge advantage on the glass, outrebounding the visitors 44-24, including 16 offensive boards.

De Angelis, a transfer from Santa Barbara (Calif.) Community College, had her second-best scoring effort as a Seawolf, shooting 4 of 6 from the field – including both of her three-point tries – and 4 of 4 at the free-throw line. Her previous high in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game had been eight points.

Meanwhile, junior center Hanna Johansson delivered 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting to run her double-digit scoring streak to 20 games, and senior guard Nikki Aden finished with seven points, six rebounds and four assists. Senior point guard Kaitlin McBride had six rebounds and a game-high five assists, while reserve forward Kaylie Robison added six rebounds.

After jumping to early leads of 13-3 and 20-8, the Seawolves could not put the Yellowjackets away, seeing MSUB come back to tie it 24-24. MSUB could never take the lead, however, despite keeping the score within single digits until the final three minutes.

Horn helped ice the game by making all four of her free throws. The sophomore forward from Kodiak shot 8 of 15 from the field and grabbed four of her rebounds on the offensive end.

The victory keeps the Seawolves one-half game ahead of 25th-ranked Seattle Pacific (13-5, 7-3) for second place in the GNAC standings. It was also UAA's eighth straight victory over the Yellowjackets.

After four straight home games, the Seawolves return to road next week to take on Central Washington (Thur., Feb. 3) and Northwest Nazarene (Sat., Feb. 5).
