Matthisen, Seawolves blast Billings, 3-0

ANCHORAGE – Outside hitter Jackie Matthisen ripped 15 kills and libero Quincy Haught controlled the back row Saturday to lift the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to its sixth straight victory with a 25-19, 25-14, 25-21 sweep of Montana State Billings at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Haught had a match-high 18 digs and setter Kimya Jafroudi tallied 34 assists as the Seawolves (10-5, 6-1 GNAC) kept pace with Western Washington atop the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings.

MSUB (8-7, 2-4) was led by 10 kills from freshman middle blocker Monica Gimsrud and 15 digs from junior libero Morgan Moss as the Yellowjackets suffered their third straight loss to the Seawolves.

The Seawolves controlled play throughout the match, using six-point runs early in the first and second sets to gain insurmountable leads. The Yellowjackets started stronger in the third set, but UAA erased a 13-10 deficit with another six-point surge. Sophomore middle blocker Robyn Burton – the GNAC's leading percentage hitter at .399 coming in – committed a rare attack error to let MSUB draw within 16-15, but she quickly made up for it with back-to-back kills, and the Yellowjackets never closer.

Burton finished with nine kills on .438 hitting (9 kills-2 errors-16 attacks), plus three total blocks, while junior right-side hitter Ariel Austin provided nine kills on .278 hitting (9-4-18).

Matthisen, a senior from East Anchorage High School, hit .316 (15-3-38) and moved into sixth place on UAA's career kills list. She now has 934 kills, surpassing Carolyn DeKay (2001-02, '04) in the school record books.

The Seawolves also had their best serving match of the year as they finished with nine aces and only four service errors. Jafroudi, a junior from Huntington Beach, Calif., had her first multi-ace performance with three, while junior outside hitter Nikkie Viotto matched her career-high for the fourth time with four aces. Viotto also had seven kills and eight digs.

UAA will look to stay on its current hot streak when it flies south next week for GNAC matches at Central Washington (Thur., Oct. 6, 6 p.m. ADT) and Northwest Nazarene (Sat., Oct. 8, 5 p.m. ADT).
