Seawolves muscle past Clan in 4

ANCHORAGE – Jackie Matthisen and Robyn Burton combined for 35 kills Saturday, boosting  Alaska Anchorage to a tougher-than-expected 25-17, 25-14, 22-25, 25-13 volleyball victory over Simon Fraser at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (14-6, 10-2 GNAC) also got 45 assists and three aces from setter Kimya Jafroudi as they  retained their share of first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with Seattle Pacific, which earned a 3-0 victory at Western Oregon earlier in the evening.

The Clan (1-16, 1-12) got seven kills apiece from Kelsey Robinson and Kristjana Fridfinnson as they took a set from the Seawolves for the first time in four all-time meetings.

Despite the hiccup in the third set, the Seawolves dominated in the first, second and fourth frames, getting 18 kills and 14 digs from Matthisen for her team-best ninth double-double of the year. The senior outside hitter from East Anchorage High School had another historic night, ascending to No. 4 on the UAA career kills list. Now with 1,021, she needs just four more to move into third place.

Meanwhile, Burton smashed 17 kills on .556 hitting, plus four total blocks. The Chugiak High product's attack percentage marked her ninth time this season topping the .500 mark.

Junior right-side hitter Ariel Austin and junior outside hitter Nikkie Viotto tallied seven kills apiece, while sophomore libero Quincy Haught made a match-high 15 digs.

UAA also got a lift off from senior McKenzie Moss, who saw some action at outside hitter and delivered back-to-back kills – her first of the season – to end the second set. The former Bartlett High standout entered the year with 576 career kills but has played primarily at defensive specialist as she recovered from offseason shoulder surgery.

The victory was UAA's third straight – all at home – before heading back to the road next week. If the Seawolves can win at MSU Billings and SPU (16-5, 10-2) beats Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday, it would set up a first-place showdown between the Seawolves and Falcons in Seattle on Saturday, Oct. 29.

NOTES: UAA's victory clinches a winning record for the fourth straight season, all since the arrival of head coach Chris Green, who improved his record to 70-37 … Jafroudi's three aces matched her career high … UAA won for just the second time this season when losing the blocking battle as Simon Fraser held a 9-7 edge in that category.
