#12 Seawolves swarm Red Storm, 95-58

ANCHORAGE – Haley Holmstead scored 21 points and Hanna Johansson posted a double-double as the 12th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team rolled to a 95-58 victory over Dixie State at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Saturday.

The Seawolves (2-0) also got nine points apiece from Kaylie Robison, Sasha King and Kylie Burns as they opened a 49-31 halftime lead and never looked back. Johansson finished with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and 10 rebounds as the preseason All-American posted her seventh career double-double. The Swede also dished a game-high five assists.

The Red Storm (1-1) was led by 13 points off the bench from LaBrea Walker as the visitors from St. George, Utah, saw their starters outscored 53-19 by their Seawolf counterparts.

UAA also delivered its best three-point shooting night in over two years, knocking down 11 of 18 for 61.1 percent. It was the first time a Seawolf team topped the .600 mark from long range since shooting 62.5 percent in a win over Western Oregon on Jan. 19, 2009.

King, who made her home debut after a taking medical redshirt in 2010-11, knocked down all three of her trey attempts and dished three assists in 13 minutes. Burns, meanwhile, equaled her career-high for the second straight night and grabbed five rebounds, and Robison was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds to just miss her own double-double.

In the teams' first-ever meeting 11 months ago, UAA jumped to an early 36-12 lead over the Red Storm, and Saturday's matchup was more of the same. Dixie, which went 24-4 last year and made the NCAA Tournament, forged a 10-10 tie six minutes into the action before UAA pulled away with 14 straight points.

Holmstead, a 5-7 junior-college All-American transfer from Salt Lake CC, did much of the damage in the deciding run and wound up shooting 10 of 15 from the field. She also added six rebounds, four assists and no turnovers in just 20 minutes.

No Seawolf played more than 26 minutes (Johansson), and eight different Seawolves sank three-pointers, including a pair for true freshman Katie Richens.

UAA outshot the Red Storm – picked to finish second in the Pacific West Conference preseason coaches' poll – 52.2 percent (35 of 67) to 26.5 percent (18 of 68) and won the rebounding battle 55-31.

The Seawolves return to the court for a pair of games against another Pac West foe when Dominican (Calif.) visits the WFSC for the first time, Nov. 18 and 19. Both games are slated for 7 p.m. tip-offs.
