Chippewas clip Seawolves in OT

ANCHORAGE – Crystal Bradford and Brandie Baker combined for 27 points and 11 assists Thursday as they led a huge Central Michigan comeback to overcome host Alaska Anchorage, 90-84 in overtime, in the third-place game of the women's Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout at Sullivan Arena.

The Chippewas (1-4) found the win column after erasing a 12-point deficit in the final five minutes, also getting 13 points and nine rebounds from forward Jas'Mine Bracey.

The Seawolves (4-2), ranked No. 7 in NCAA Div. II, were led by a career-high 22-point, 16-rebound effort from senior forward Kaylie Robison, plus 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists from senior center Hanna Johansson. Combined with her 13 rebounds in Wednesday's loss to Miami, Robison tied the Shootout two-game record for rebounds with 29 overall.

After snapping a 43-43 tie with back-to-back to three-pointers from reserve guards Kylie Burns and Sasha King, the Seawolves pushed their lead to 68-56 on a backdoor layup by Burns with 5:16 remaining.

Bradford, who had been struggling up till that point, then came alive, spearheading a Chippewa full-court press that forced consecutive Seawolf turnovers and led to a 12-2 CMU run. With 42 seconds left, Baker missed a potential tying layup and was called for the foul on Robison, who made her first free throw. After a timeout, however, Robinson's second attempt bounced off, and Baker answered with a tying three-pointer with 17 seconds left. UAA called timeout to draw up a play, but the Seawolves could not execute and King's three-point attempt came up short at the buzzer.

The Chippewas took the momentum to the extra session, scoring the first two baskets and leading the rest of the way.

Junior guard Bruna Deichmann added 10 points and a game-high seven assists for the Seawolves, while freshman guard Gritt Ryder had eight points.

The winless Shootout was UAA's first since 2005, preceding a run of four straight titles and a runner-up finish last year.

The Seawolves return to Division II action Dec. 3 when they start their Great Northwest Athletic Conference season with a road game at Alaska Fairbanks. That game tips at 3 p.m. at the Patty Center.
