Dartmouth surges past UAA in 2nd half

ANCHORAGE – Senior forward David Rufful had 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists Friday to lead Dartmouth to a 64-52 victory over host Alaska Anchorage in the consolation semifinals of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout at Sullivan Arena.

The Big Green (2-3) also got 13 points and 10 rebounds from center Jvonte Brooks, plus 12 points and four assists from guard Jabari Trotter.

The Seawolves (0-2), ranked No. 17 in NCAA Div. II, were led by 11 points from sophomore guard Travis Thompson – all in the first half – and a career-high 10 points from senior forward Phillip Hearn.

After falling behind 23-15, UAA fought back for a 25-25 halftime tie thanks to three three-pointers by Thompson, a local product from Anchorage's Dimond High School. UAA could not continue its momentum in the second half, however, as Rufful hit a tie-breaking three to make it 32-29 and start a Big Green surge. The visitors from Hanover, N.H., pushed the lead to 45-35 with 7:03 remaining and never let the Seawolves within single digits again.

Dartmouth outrebounded UAA 40-23 and won the shooting battle, .447 (21 of 47) to .328 (19 of 58). Rufful shot 6 of 11 from the field and 3 of 4 from long range, hitting all of his treys at key spots in the game.

Senior center Taylor Rohde had nine points and four rebounds for UAA before fouling out, while senior point guard Steve White added seven points.

The affair marked UAA's first-ever game against a member of the Ivy League or a team from New Hampshire.

Dartmouth moves on to play in Saturday's 2 p.m. 4th/6th-place game against the Central Michigan-UC Irvine winner, while UAA will play for 7th place against the CMU-UCI loser at noon Saturday.
