Johansson powers women to road win

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Senior Hanna Johansson had 23 points and 11 rebounds Thursday to help 10th-ranked Alaska Anchorage overcome a strong challenge from host Central Washington for a 78-60 women's basketball victory at Nicholson Pavilion.

The Seawolves (11-2, 2-0 GNAC) also got 11 points apiece from Haley Holmstead, Alysa Horn and Kaylie Robison as they won their seventh straight game and stayed perfect in the early Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings.

The Wildcats (3-7, 0-3) got 17 points from forward Jessica VanDyke as they led for much of the first half before suffering their 10th straight loss in the series.

Despite averaging 41-point victories against its first nine Division II opponents this season, the Seawolves got a much tougher test from the start Thursday, trailing 10-4 early and 34-31 with 90 seconds left in the first half.

Holmstead hit a short jumper with 1:28 left in the half and Johansson scored on a spinning layup at the buzzer, however, to give UAA a 35-34 lead. The run would stretch to 12-0 spanning the halves as Robison and Holmstead each scored a pair of quick buckets to make it 43-34 with 17:39 on the clock.

Johansson, who shot 9 of 13 from the field and 5 of 6 at the free-throw line, added a layup at the 16:21 mark to put UAA ahead by double digits for good with 16:21 remaining, and the Seawolves stretched their largest advantage to 66-45 midway through the half.

UAA shot 54.2 percent (32 of 59) overall, including 46.7 percent (7 of 15) from three-point range. Holmstead and Robison both shot 5 of 7 from the field, while Horn knocked down 3-of-6 treys.

The Wildcats were 23 of 63 (.365) from the field and became the first team this season to outrebound the Seawolves, doing so by a 37-34 count.

In addition to her double-double, Johansson had a strong all-around performance as the 6-2 center from Sweden added four steals, three assists and two blocks. Junior point guard Sasha King came off the bench to dish a team-high six assists.

The Seawolves play their third straight league road game Saturday when they end the calendar year with a 1 p.m. AST tip-off against Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho.
