Johansson, Seawolves wallop Wolves

ANCHORAGE – Junior center Hanna Johansson had 24 points and a career-high 14 rebounds Saturday to help the 14th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a wire-to-wire victory, 71-47 over Western Oregon at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (21-5, 12-3 GNAC) also got 12 points and six rebounds from sophomore forward Alysa Horn as they won their sixth straight game and swept the season series from WOU for the seventh consecutive year.

The Wolves (9-13, 7-7) were led by 13 points from reserve guard Hannah Whitsett, plus 11 points and eight rebounds from senior guard Sarah Zahler.

UAA opened the game with a 13-2 run as Johansson compiled nine points and seven rebounds in the first six minutes of action. The 6-2 Swede finished one point shy of her career-high in scoring and bettered her previous rebounding high by three boards. UAA's all-time field-goal percentage leader shot 8 of 11 from the floor and 8 of 10 at the foul stripe, adding three steals, two assists and two blocks.

The Seawolves led 34-16 at halftime and stretched their margin as high as 59-24 midway through the second stanza.

Senior point guard Kaitlin McBride was solid again with nine points (7-8 FT) and seven assists, helping 12 of UAA's 15 players find the scoring column.

The victory was UAA's 15th straight against WOU, extending the program record for most consecutive wins against any opponent.

UAA, ranked No. 4 in the NCAA Division II West Region, returns to action Thursday, Feb. 17, when it takes on nationally 7th- and regionally 2nd-ranked Western Washington in Bellingham, Wash.
