#14 Seawolves fall at #6 Vikings, 67-57

ANCHORAGE – Senior guard Amanda Dunbar led a balanced Western Washington attack with 18 points Thursday to push the Vikings to a 67-57 win over Alaska Anchorage in a battle of nationally ranked women's basketball teams at Carver Gymnasium.

The 14th-ranked Seawolves (21-6, 12-4 GNAC) got 16 points and four assists from senior point guard Kaitlin McBride but could not manage a comeback as the 6th-ranked Vikings (22-1, 15-0) clinched the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title and home-court advantage throughout the league's upcoming postseason tournament.

Forward Gabby Wade had 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds for the hosts, while Kristin Schramm had 14 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting. The Vikings took a 39-25 halftime lead on the strength of their long-range marksmanship, hitting eight of their first 10 three-pointers on the night.

After falling behind 47-25 early in the second half, the Seawolves made a run to get within 51-43 on Alysa Horn 's three-pointer at the 8:38 mark. But the Vikings, ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division II West Region, pushed their lead back to 14 points and held on from there.

Center Hanna Johansson had nine points and five steals for UAA, and senior guard Nikki Aden tallied eight points. Tanee' Denson-Griffin (seven points, three steals) and Kaylie Robison (seven points, two assists) made contributions off the bench for the regionally 4th-ranked Seawolves as well.

Despite the loss, UAA still holds a 1.5-game lead over Seattle Pacific for second place in the GNAC standings. The Seawolves have two games remaining – Saturday at Simon Fraser (7-13, 4-11) and Thursday at home against Alaska Fairbanks (1-15, 1-22) – while SPU plays at Saint Martin's on Thursday and twice at home next week.

UAA needs just one more win or a Saint Martin's loss in its final three games in order to clinch a first-round home game Feb. 28 in the GNAC Tournament.

The Seawolves tip off at 4:15 p.m. AST on Saturday against SFU in Burnaby, British Columbia.
