Broncos stop Seawolves in 2nd Round

POMONA, Calif. – The nationally 12th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team saw its season come to an end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season Saturday as it fell 67-47 to host and 23rd-ranked Cal Poly Pomona at Kellogg Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (27-7), seeded No. 5 in the West Regional Championships, were led by 16 points from senior guard Nikki Aden , but UAA could not overcome a slow start against the top-seeded Broncos (27-4).

UAA also got 10 points from sophomore forward Alysa Horn , plus eight points and seven rebounds from All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference junior center Hanna Johansson in the loss.

Cal Poly Pomona, which avenged a first-round NCAA loss to the Seawolves last year, was led by 18 points and five rebounds from West Region Player-of-the-Year Reyana Colson, who shot 7 of 14 from the field. The Broncos will now face 2nd-seeded Grand Canyon on Monday night for the regional title and a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight.

The Seawolves took an early 6-3 lead on consecutive three-pointers from Aden before the Broncos answered with a 16-2 run to take control. Senior point guard Kaitlin McBride , the MVP of last week's GNAC Tournament, nailed a jumper with 4:18 left in the first half to slice the deficit to 26-20, but CPP put on another run to end the half with a 34-22 advantage.

An Aden steal led to a jumper by Horn with 17:18 left in the game, making it 37-27, however the Seawolves could get no closer as the Broncos led by double digits the rest of the way.

Aden, who finished her career with a UAA all-sport record of 110 victories in a Seawolf uniform, shot 6 of 12 from the field, including 4 of 6 on treys. Horn shot 4 of 11 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers, but the Seawolves managed to shoot just 35.3 percent (18 of 51) as they equaled their lowest scoring output of the season.

UAA advanced to the second round of the NCAAs for the fifth straight season with Friday's 55-48 victory over Western Washington, but saw its run end for the third time against the host team in the second round. The Seawolves were knocked out by UC San Diego in 2007 and Seattle Pacific in 2010, both of which went on to win the regional title. UAA won the regional championship in 2008 and 2009 as a No. 3 seed.

NOTES: Aden finished her career with the program record for victories (110) and games played (130) … the Portland, Ore., native also finished high on UAA's career lists for points (18th, 840), steals (10th, 151), three-pointers made (7th, 107), free-throw percentage (6th, .768) and games started (t-10th, 76) … Johansson became 13th Seawolf woman to grab 500 career rebounds with her first carom on Saturday; the Gothenburg, Sweden, native will enter her final season at No. 13 on UAA's career scoring list (893 points) and tied for 12th in rebounds (506) … McBride, a Second Team All-GNAC performer this year, and Nikiski native Sarah Herrin joined Aden in playing their final games in a Seawolf uniform ... UAA's 27 victories were the third-most in school history behind the 2008-09 (31-4) and 2007-08 (30-5) squads.
