UAA shreds Chaminade, edged by Hilo

HONOLULU – Jackie Matthisen smashed nine kills and the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team got big matches from all three of its junior-college transfers to close its Hawaii trip with a 25-12, 25-17, 25-14 thrashing of Chaminade at McCabe Gymnasium on Saturday night.

Earlier Saturday, outside hitters Nikkie Viotto and Matthisen both posted double-doubles, but the timely hitting of Hawaii-Hilo star Hillary Hurley proved too much as the Vulcans earned a 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23 victory over the Seawolves at McCabe.

UAA will travel to the Coyote Invitational in San Bernardino, Calif., next week with a 2-2 record thanks to a dominating effort against the Silverswords. The Seawolves outhit their hosts .312 to -.023, outblocked them 9-0, and out-aced them 8-3.

Ariel Austin, a 6-0 right-side hitter from Western Nebraska Community College, had her best match yet as a Seawolf with nine kills and one error in just 13 attempts (.615 att%), plus six total blocks. Middle blocker Miranda Doing, from Pasadena (Calif.) CC, had 4 kills on just seven attacks and eight total blocks, while setter Kimya Jafroudi, from Orange Coast (Calif.) College, notched 23 assists, two blocks and four digs, and connected for kills on her only two attacks.

Crystal Powell led Chaminade (1-1) with seven kills, but the Pacific West Conference school could not keep pace despite winning the first point of each set.

Matthisen, who moved into UAA's career top 10 in kills in Saturday's early match, finished with nine kills and just one error in 28 attempts (.286) against Chaminade. The 5-10 senior from East Anchorage High School now stands No. 10 with 786 kills in a Seawolf uniform.

Sophomore libero Quincy Haught led the Seawolves with 10 digs, pacing the team in that category all four matches thus far.

In the early match, the Seawolves got 15 kills apiece from Viotto and Matthisen, while sophomore middle blocker Robyn Burton had 10 kills and five total blocks. The Vulcans (2-0) were led by Hurley's 26 kills, 12 digs and four blocks, plus nine kills and 11 digs from Kirsten Sparnaau.

It was the first match between the teams since UAA's 5-set victory in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament, and this one was nearly as exciting. After fending off elimination in the third set, the Seawolves appeared on the verge of sending it the distance with leads of 22-20 and 23-22 late in the fourth. The Vulcans – the defending Pacific West Conference co-champions – responded, however, with the final three points of the match.

Neither team was sharp, but Hilo's superior hitting – .184 to .146 – turned out to be the difference in an evenly matched contest.

Viotto, a junior from Eagle River, had 12 digs to earn her first career double-double, while Matthisen made 10 digs. Sophomore libero Quincy Haught led the Seawolves with 16 digs, and sophomore setter Siobhan Johansen had a team-high 23 assists.

Jafroudi also saw time running the offense, finishing with 18 assists and 10 digs.

The Seawolves close their non-conference schedule Sept. 2-3 in San Bernardino. UAA opens against Chico State on Friday at 11 a.m. ADT in the first of four matches against California Collegiate Athletic Association teams.
