FAIRBANKS – Alaska Anchorage middle blocker Robyn
Burton delivered a dominating performance Saturday to lead the Seawolves to a
27-25, 25-21, 25-13 volleyball victory over Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty
Center.
Burton, a 5-11 sophomore from Chugiak High School, blasted 11 kills on just 17
attacks with no errors and had five total blocks to lead the sweep. UAA (6-5,
2-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got eight kills from senior
outside hitter Jackie Matthisen and 30 assists from sophomore setter Siobhan
Johansen to win for the third straight year in Fairbanks.
Junior middle blocker Casey Tidwell led UAF (0-11, 0-3 GNAC) with six kills and
three total blocks, but the Nanooks could not capitalize on a fast start.
The Seawolves found themselves down 14-5 in the first set before even
registering a kill, earning their four points on Nanook service errors. Then,
trailing 20-11, UAA got a kill from Nikkie Viotto and won the next six points
behind the serve of freshman Jordan Bush, including three straight aces. A
Reilly Stevens kill re-established UAF's lead at 23-20 before the Seawolves
tied on a Burton kill, an ace by Quincy Haught, and a solo block by Matthisen.
The Nanooks earned two set points at 24-23 and 25-24, but Matthisen slammed a
kill and Keri Knight was blocked by Miranda Doing and Nora Anders. A pair of
UAF attack errors then gave UAA the set and the momentum for the rest of the
night.
UAA jumped to an 11-3 lead in the second set with Burton tallying three kills
and three block assists in the run. The third set was tighter early, tied 8-8
before the Seawolves won 12 of the next 13 points.
For Burton, the Chugiak High product's .647 attack percentage marked the fifth
time she has hit .500 or better this season. She entered the match hitting a GNAC-best
.367.
“Thank goodness Robyn was on our side tonight,” said Seawolf head coach Chris
Green. “She was dominant late in the first and throughout the second set. Her
good play helped the rest of the team calm down and keep composed in that first
set. I'm proud of the way the kids responded to adversity tonight.”
Green also got a lift from the play of Anders, a true freshman from Werdohl,
Germany, who tallied three kills and three block assists in her first extended
playing time. Anders was filling in for regular right-side hitter Ariel Austin,
who missed her first match with a leg injury. UAA was also without injured junior
setter/defensive specialist
Kimya
Jafroudi, who missed her second straight match.
Haught, a sophomore libero, led the Seawolves with 11 digs and served a pair of
aces.
The Seawovles stay on the road next week when they try for their first
three-match winning streak of the season Thursday at Simon Fraser in Burnaby,
British Columbia. Nationally ranked and league-leading Western Washington then
hosts UAA on Saturday, Sept. 24 in Bellingham.
