Hot-shooting SFU upsets #8 UAA women

BURNABY, British Columbia – Haley Holmstead scored a game-high 22 points but the 8th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team was victimized by the 64 percent three-point shooting of host Simon Fraser in a 77-69 loss Thursday at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (14-3, 5-1 GNAC) also got 16 points and nine rebounds from senior Hanna Johansson as they saw their 10-game winning streak and unbeaten mark against Division II competition come to an end.

The Clan (9-5, 4-2), meanwhile, got 18 points from guard Kristina Collins and an 11-point, 15-rebound outing from center Nayo Raincock Ekunwe, putting five players in double figures and knocking down 14 of 22 three-pointers.

Despite a quick, 13-3 start UAA found itself trailing 33-23 late in the first half. The Seawolves ended the half with an 8-0 run and Johansson scored the first basket of the second to reclaim the lead, but SFU would not concede the momentum.

A three-pointer by Erin Chambers put the Clan up 54-43 at the 11:41 mark, and a layup by Raincock-Ekunwe gave the hosts their largest lead, 59-46, with 10:03 left.

Johansson sank a layup to draw UAA within 61-58 with 6 minutes on the clock, but the Seawolves could get no closer.

The Seawolves face another tough game Saturday when they travel to Bellingham, Wash., to face Great Northwest Athletic Conference defending regular-season champion Western Washington.  That game tips at 6 p.m. AST at Carver Gymnasium.
