Women rebound with road rout of Vikings

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Coming off their first loss since November, the 8th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team bounced back in style Saturday with a 75-55 victory over Western Washington at Carver Gymnasium in a battle for first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

In a rematch of last year's GNAC Tournament championship game – won 68-67 by UAA here last March – the Seawolves (15-3, 6-1 GNAC) controlled action from the start, getting 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and six rebounds from Hanna Johansson.

Junior forward Alysa Horn added 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds as UAA shot 51 percent and forced the Vikings (11-4, 5-2) into 25 turnovers.

WWU, the defending GNAC regular-season champion, was led by 11 points and seven rebounds from center Britt Harris.

Junior guard Haley Holmstead was the third Seawolf in double figures with 12 points, while junior point guard Sasha King had a huge all-around performance with seven points, seven assists and seven steals.

The Seawolves, who lost 77-69 at Simon Fraser on Thursday, improved to 14-1 against fellow Division II competition this season with the win over WWU.

UAA now returns home for four straight games, beginning Thur., Jan. 19 against Western Oregon. That game tips at 7 p.m. AST at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
