Vikings stop Seawolves home streaks

ANCHORAGE – A balanced offensive attack was not enough for the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team Saturday as nationally 16th-ranked Western Washington snapped the Seawolves' 16-match home winning streak with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-18 decision at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (10-5, 5-2 GNAC) got nine kills apiece from freshmen Julia Mackey and Katelynn Zanders, while senior setter Kimya Jafroudi accounted for 30 assists and 12 digs.

The Vikings (14-2, 7-1 GNAC) were powered by senior outside hitter Marlayna Geary's 16 kills on .387 hitting, along with 15 digs. Right-side hitter Kelsey Moore accounted for 12 kills and libero Samantha Hutchinson had 26 digs for the visitors from Bellingham, who became the first team to sweep UAA in Anchorage since Montana State Billings on Sept. 18, 2009 – a span of 35 matches.

After WWU pulled away slowly in the first two sets, the Seawolves went toe-to-toe with the Vikings early in set 3, taking a 9-7 lead on consecutive kills by Zanders and Mackey. But the Vikings – who had not won in Anchorage since 2008 – answered with three straight points and never trailed again.

UAA got three blocks and a career-high six kills from freshman Breanne Sytnyk, while fellow middle blocker Jodi Huddleston had six kills and a career-best six digs. Junior libero Siobhan Johansen tallied a team-high 18 digs and sophomore Jordan Bush had eight digs, plus the second kill of her career.

The loss was UAA's first in nine matches at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex this season after winning the final eight at home in 2011.

The Seawolves return to the road next week against defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion Seattle Pacific (Thur., Oct. 11, 6 pm ADT) and Montana State Billings (Sat., Oct. 13, 5 pm ADT), marking the midway point of the league season.

UAA, which had five of its first seven GNAC contests at home, now finishes the season with seven of 11 matches on the road.
