ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Senior Nikkie Viotto had
team-highs of seven kills and nine digs Saturday but the Alaska Anchorage
volleyball team had little luck in a three-set defeat against a playoff-hungry
Central Washington squad at Nicholson Pavilion.
The Seawolves finished the 2012 season with a 16-10 overall record – the fifth
straight winning campaign under head coach Chris Green – and tied for fourth
place with Seattle Pacific in the final Great Northwest Athletic Conference
standings at 11-7.
The Wildcats (21-7, 14-4), ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Div. II West Region, likely
clinched a playoff berth with the 25-13, 25-21, 25-16 win, led by Marcy
Hjellum's 15 kills.
Freshman outside hitter Katelynn Zanders finished with six kills for UAA, but
no other Seawolf managed more than four.
It was the final match of Viotto's four-year career as the outside
hitter/defensive specialist from Eagle River finished in the top 20 on UAA's
all-time list in digs, aces, aces per set, sets played, matches played and
matches won. Senior setter Kimya Jafroudi also played for the final time in
college, with the Huntington Beach, Calif., product tallying 14 assists.
