Lions bite Bobcats in consolation semis

ANCHORAGE – Loyola Marymount got a combined 36 points and 21 rebounds from the inside-outside combo of Ashley Hamilton and Anthony Ireland as the Lions rolled to a 78-63 victory Friday over Texas State in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout consolation semifinals at Sullivan Arena.

Ireland, who scored his 1,000th career point in the victory, finished with 23 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Lions (3-2), while Hamilton had 13 points and a tournament-high 14 rebounds.

Guard Vonn Jones led Texas State (2-3) with 14 points and five assists, and forward Matt Staff added 11 points off the bench.

LMU, from the West Coast Conference, took a 33-28 lead at halftime and slowly extended its advantage throughout the second half, getting 18 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks from swingman Ayodeji Egbeyemi as well.

The Lions advance to 4th/6th-place game to face host Alaska Anchorage (5-1) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Bobcats, from the Western Athletic Conference, will play UC Riverside (1-5) for 7th place on Saturday at noon.
