Seawolves forge 2-2 tie with Beavers

BEMIDJI STATE, Minn. - For the second straight game, the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves earned a 2-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association tie following extra minutes with host Bemidji State at the Sanford Center on Friday evening.

The Seawolves, who also tied then-No. 2 ranked Minnesota on Nov. 10, earned their third WCHA tie of the season for a 2-3-4 overall record and a 0-2-3 slate in league play. The Beavers, playing in their third straight overtime game, are now 2-5-2 and 1-4-2.

Following a scoreless opening stanza, the Seawolves took a 1-0 lead at 17:25 in the second with an extra-attacker strike by rookie Blake Tatchell. A local from North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Tatchell collected his third tally of the season after placing a shot on Mathieu Dogas and picking up the rebound. Freshman Blake Leask and senior Jordan Kwas were credited with the assists.

The Beavers knotted the game at 2:14 of the third with an even-strength goal by Jeff Jubinville. Entering the Seawolf zone with a 2-on-1, David Boehmn fed Jubinville a pass at the center to beat Rob Gunderson, five-hole.

Jubinville gave BSU its first lead of the night with his second at 11:17 before sophomore Austin Coldwell (Vancouver, Wash.) furnished the game-tying goal with his first of the season at 15:29. Sophomore Kory Roy and junior Matt Bailey picked up the helpers on Coldwell's strike.

The game went into extra minutes with BSU out shooting UAA, 4-1.

With the tie, Gunderson (30 saves) stays undefeated in the crease at 1-0-4. The starting call was the first back-to-back starts for either of the UAA goaltenders. The Seawolves and Beavers tied for shots on goal, each with 32.

UAA posted a season-low one penalty, while BSU was tagged for six infractions. Both teams were unable to capitalize on the man advantage.

Both teams have now gone five games without a win, while the Seawolves remain undefeated when scoring first at 2-0-2. The tie also broke a three-game winning streak for BSU against UAA.

The Seawolves and Beavers will rematch tomorrow night at 4:07 p.m. AST. The game can be viewed on GCI Channel 1 or online at America ONE.
