Seawolves fend off Clan in three

BURNABY, British Columbia – Julia Mackey had 11 kills and Jodi Huddleston delivered key points late in the first and third sets Saturday to lift Alaska Anchorage to a 25-23, 25-16, 25-21 volleyball victory over Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (15-7, 10-4 GNAC) also got nine kills, 11 digs and two aces from senior Nikkie Viotto as they remained unbeaten in six all-time meetings with SFU.

The Clan (4-18, 1-14) were led by eight kills from outside hitter Jessica Young, but the home team was outdug 57-43 by UAA and nearly doubled up in hitting percentage, .202 to .105.

UAA took control despite a shaky opening frame, winning when Huddleston notched two kills in the final four points, including set point with a narrow 24-23 edge.

After controlling the action throughout the second set, UAA surrendered an early lead in the third and found itself tied 21-21 after a four-point SFU surge. Huddleston rose to the occasion again, however, sandwiching three kills around a Viotto ace to seal the win. The junior from Scottsbluff, Neb., finished with a .333 attack percentage, while adding a pair of block assists.

Senior setter Kimya Jafroudi delivered 39 assists and eight digs, and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference aces leader added three more to her total.

The most efficient performance of the night went to Mackey as the freshman from Fairbanks (West Valley HS) finished with a .381 percentage, notching her 11 kills on just 21 attacks.

Junior libero Siobhan Johansen paced the back-row effort with a match-high 16 digs.

The win keeps UAA tied for third in the GNAC with regionally 7th-ranked Central Washington with two week (four matches) left in the regular season. The Seawolves return to the Wells Fargo Sports Complex next week for their home finales, starting with a 7 p.m. Thursday showdown against Montana State Billings.

NOTES: The victory assured the Seawolves of a winning GNAC record for the fourth straight season … Viotto's two aces Saturday move her into a 6th-place tie on the program's all-time list, now with 114 …  the Seawolves had one of their best service efforts of the season, tallying seven aces with just two errors … UAA has won 18 of 19 sets all-time against the Clan, who joined the GNAC in 2010.
