Falcons upset #8 Seawolves in Seattle

SEATTLE – Gritt Ryder scored a career-high 15 points to lead a huge second-half comeback, but the nationally 8th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team could not break its bad-luck streak at Royal Brougham Pavilion, losing 67-62 to Seattle Pacific on Thursday night.

The Seawolves (19-4, 10-2 GNAC) also got 13 points from junior guard Haley Holmstead as they saw their five-game winning streak stopped.

The Falcons (14-6, 8-4) were led by 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists from senior guard Nyesha Sims, plus nine points and nine rebounds from guard Jordan Harazin as they split the season series with UAA and remained in contention for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season title.

UAA – now 0-11 in regular-season games at Brougham since the formation of the GNAC in 2001-02 – committed 13 turnovers and trailed 45-26 before Kaylie Robison scored the final basket of the first half.

The Seawolves started the second stanza with an 8-0 run, however, and fought all the way back to take the lead, 50-49, on two free throws by Robison with 6:49 remaining. The lead would be short-lived, though, with SPU forward Katie Benson producing seven points over the next three minutes.

Ryder, who was 3 of 7 from three-point range, nailed her final trey to make it 57-55 with 3:37 left, but the Seawolves would miss three shots to take the lead in the ensuing minutes. After Sasha King missed a short jumper, the Seawolf bench was then whistled for a technical with 2:08 on the clock, and Harazin made both free throws.

King hit a three-pointer with 42 seconds left to make it a 63-60 game, but the Falcons clinched it when Aubree Callen nailed a long two-pointer from the corner with 13 seconds left.

King finished with 13 points and four assists and Robison added 10 points, but All-America center candidate Hanna Johansson was held 10 points under her scoring average and fouled out late, finishing with seven rebounds and a season-low four points.

SPU outrebounded the Seawolves 38-34 and got solid play from its reserves, who outscored their Seawolf counterparts 21-6.

The Seawolves, who now hold a 1.5-game lead on Western Washington with six games to play, return to the court Saturday (5 p.m. AST) at Montana State Billings.
