Seawolves claw past Yellowjackets

BILLINGS, Mont. – Kaylie Robison posted a double-double and Haley Holmstead scored 19 points Saturday to help the 8th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team rally Saturday for a 56-51 victory over Montana State Billings at Alterowitz Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (20-4, 11-2 GNAC) got 14 points and 13 rebounds from Robison as they swept the season series and won their 10th straight against MSUB since the Yellowjackets joined the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in 2007-08.

The Yellowjackets (16-8, 8-5) were led by 16 points from freshman Quinn Peoples but were unable to stay with the visitors on the boards, getting outrebounded 47-34.

MSUB led by as many as seven points in the first half and took a 32-27 lead when Bobbi Knudsen penetrated and hit a layup at the halftime buzzer.

UAA trailed by eight when MSUB's Kallie Stanhope hit a three-pointer to start the second half, however Holmstead answered with a trey of her own to start an 8-0 Seawolf run.

The game stayed within a single possession for several minutes before UAA broke a 44-44 tie with consecutive baskets by Holmstead, Robison and Alysa Horn, whose 12-foot jumper swished through with 8:02 remaining.

The Seawolves extended to a 55-46 advantage on a Holmstead free throw with 3:01 left and managed to hang on.

Horn finished with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting and swatted two shots, while senior center Hanna Johansson scored all nine of her points in the second half and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, just missing her 10th double-double of the season.

Robison, meanwhile, collected her sixth double-double this year thanks to 6-of-8 shooting. The Utah native had seven of her 13 rebounds on the offensive end.

The Seawolves clinched their sixth straight 20-win season and the 11th in program history, avoiding their first back-to-back losses against fellow Division II teams since February 2009.

UAA also became the first team to officially clinch a spot in next month's GNAC Tournament, which will feature the league's top six squads, Mar. 1-3 in Lacey, Wash.
