Seawolves snap jinx at SPU, 77-72

SEATTLE – Sasha King scored 23 points and fellow senior Alysa Horn had nine points and nine rebounds Saturday as Alaska Anchorage earned a women's basketball upset over Seattle Pacific at Royal Brougham Pavilion.

The Seawolves (8-5, 2-3 GNAC) also got career-high scoring nights from Northwest Washington natives Alli Madison and Jessica Madison as they won a regular-season Great Northwest Athletic Conference game at Brougham for the first time in 12 tries.

The Falcons (10-4, 4-2), who fell to 6-1 at home this season, were led by 19 points and 17 rebounds from junior post Katie Benson.

After trailing 28-15, UAA scored 26 points over the final 6:09 of the first half to tie it 41-41 at the break. SPU forged a pair of four-point leads early in the second half but could never pull away. King, who shot 6 of 12 overall, nailed one of her five three-pointers with 10:31 remaining, putting the Seawolves ahead for good.

UAA made it 75-68 on Alli Madison's three-pointer at the 3:24 mark before the Falcons answered with four straight free throws. SPU missed three short shots with less than 50 seconds on the clock, and King grabbed the rebound. Inbounding the ball against a full-court press with 23 seconds left, Kylie Burns then found Jenna Buchanan wide open under the basket for the clinching layup and final points of the game.

Alli Madison, a sophomore from Seattle's Kennedy High School, finished with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting (2-4 3FG), while Jessica Madison, a redshirt freshman from Port Angeles, Wash., made 5 of 9 from the field, including a pair of treys.

Meanwhile, King was hot all night, making 5 of 9 from three-point land and all six of her free throws. Horn nearly got her eighth career double-double before fouling out with 6:17 left.

“I thought our players showed a great deal of resilience tonight, especially playing without our leading rebounder for the last six minutes,” said UAA first-year head coach Ryan McCarthy. “I'm really happy that their effort resulted in a well-earned win against a very good team.”

UAA entered Saturday 1-20 all-time in regular-season conference games at Brougham Pavilion, including a decade for both program in the Pacific West Conference. The Seawolves' only previous win since 1991 was an 85-74 decision on Feb. 5, 2000.

The win snaps UAA's three-game losing streak as it prepares for home games next week against Northwest Nazarene (Thur., Jan. 17) and Central Washington (Sat., Jan. 19).
