Win streak ends at hands of Crusaders

ANCHORAGE – Katelynn Zanders blasted a match-high 18 kills but the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team could not overcome a sharp Northwest Nazarene squad as the Crusaders earned a 17-25, 25-23, 25-9, 25-22 upset Thursday at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (15-7, 9-1 GNAC) – who saw their nine-match win streak snapped – also got eight kills apiece from Brooke Pottle and Jodi Huddleston.

The Crusaders (11-5, 7-3) out-hit the Seawolves .222 to .143 behind 15 kills from outside hitter Elayna Rice and 11 kills, seven block assists from middle blocker Andrea Terpstra. NNU's setter-libero combo of Michelle Terpstra and Taylor Roberts accounted for 47 assists and 37 digs, too, helping the visitors from Nampa, Idaho, avenge a 4-set home loss to UAA last month.

UAA started strong despite the absence of sophomore outside hitter and kills co-leader Julia Mackey, who missed the first match of her career with a leg injury. The Seawolves got four kills and three of her career-high six total blocks from Zanders to cruise to an opening-set victory.

The second set would turn out to be the decisive frame, however, featuring seven ties and five lead changes. UAA knotted it 20-20 on a kill from Caitlin McInerney before NNU scored the next three points to take control. Trailing 24-22, Zanders kept UAA alive with a kill before Andrea Terpstra answered with the clinching spike.

NNU dominated the third set with a .609 to .000 hitting advantage and controlled much of the fourth until UAA made a late comeback. The Seawolves recovered from a 16-11 hole to crawl within 20-18 on a block by Zanders and freshman Erin Braun (5 kills, 5 block assists). NNU whistled a quick timeout to stop the momentum and used a 4-1 surge to earn match point at 24-19. After a kill by Zanders and two NNU attack errors, Michelle Terpstra finally completed the upset on a quick kill off a pass from Roberts.

Zanders recorded her team-best seventh double-double this season as she added 11 digs, while junior libero Quinn Barker made a match-high 22 digs. Pottle and Siobhan Johansen had 13 digs each, and freshman setter Morgan Hooe reached a career-high with 27 assists.

The Seawolves remain in first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings thanks to Seattle Pacific's 3-1 upset of No. 8 Western Washington earlier in the evening. UAA hosts Central Washington (10-8, 6-4) – winners of four straight – on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the WFSC.

NOTES: UAA suffered just its second home loss of the season and fell to 45-9 at home in six seasons under head coach Chris Green … UAA's nine straight wins tie for the sixth-longest streak in program history … the Seawolves were missing 3.23 kills and 0.64 blocks per set with the absence of Mackey, who also ranks among the GNAC hitting leaders at .277.
