BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green Falcons earned the Western Collegiate Hockey Association sweep with a 1-0 victory over the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves Saturday at the BGSU Ice Arena in the team's first meetings as league members.
The Falcons improved to 4-2-2 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play following the sweep, while the Seawolves drop to 3-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the conference. The Falcons collected all four WCHA points following a 6-1 win on Friday evening.
With the final minutes ticking off the clock, senior Matt Bailey drew a tripping penalty at 17:31, setting up a 6-on-4 once senior goaltender Rob Gunderson was pulled for the extra attacker at 18:35. The Seawolves had 25 seconds to find the tying goal when rookie Dylan Hubbs got two minutes for hooking, ending the UAA momentum.
The Falcons, who stay undefeated against UAA at 4-0-0, furnished the only tally of the evening at 11:50 of the opening frame. Brent Tate registered the goal, besting Gunderson, top-shelf, glove side with a wrister. Dan DeSalvo and Ralfs Freibergs received the helpers.
The Seawolves had a scoring opportunity four minutes into the second when freshman Hudson Friesen broke away from the Falcon defense, only to be stifled by freshman netminder Tomas Sholl.
UAA was held to a season low 16 shots on goal, while BGSU found the net 25 times. Gunderson (1-2-0) made 24 saves.
The Seawolves served 14 minutes in the box to the Falcons 12.
For the first time in just shy of a month when they host conference newcomer Alabama Huntsville for Parent's Weekend, Nov. 8-9 at the Sullivan Arena. The games are scheduled to commence at 7:07 p.m. ADT.
