ANCHORAGE – The Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team will have an opportunity to play for its seventh Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout title after posting a come-from-behind 83-75 double-overtime win over UC Riverside Tuesday in opening-round action of the Shootout at the Sullivan Arena.
The Seawolves, which improved to 5-0 on the season, will meet Georgetown in Wednesday's championship game at 5 p.m. Riverside, 2-3, will meet Nicholls in the consolation game at 2:30 p.m.
Freshman Kiki Robertson paced four UAA players in double figures with 20 points. Alli Madison added 17, Kylie Burns 15 and Jessica Madison 13. Alli Madison also grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
Riverside was led by a trio of double-double efforts from Jamila Williams (22 points, 13 rebounds), Annelise Ito (19 points, 16 rebounds) and Simone DeCoud (18 points, 12 rebounds).
Trailing 37-23 at halftime and trailing by as many as 16 early in the second stanza, the Seawolves roared back in the second half, eventually taking the lead at 61-59 on a three-pointer by Jessica Madison with 3:51 left in regulation.
But neither team was able to put the other way, ending regulation tied at 64-all.
The first overtime ended at 71-71, setting up the deciding second extra frame.
Both team struggled from the field which led to a whopping 122 total rebounds. The Highlanders held a narrow 63-59 rebound edge at game's end.
UAA, which is 34-51 all-time in its signature event, previously won Shootout titles in 1990, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
