Seawolves knock off #6 Falcons, 77-65

ANCHORAGE – Alli Madison scored 21 points and Emily Craft delivered her first career double-double Saturday to lift Alaska Anchorage to 77-65 women's basketball upset of nationally 6th-ranked Seattle Pacific at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (7-1, 2-0 GNAC) also got 12 points and six rebounds from sophomore guard Jessica Madison, plus 10 points off the bench from sophomore guard Jenna Buchanan to win their third straight in the series against SPU.

The Falcons (7-1, 1-1) were led by 26 points, 12 rebounds and four assists from center Katie Benson, but UAA had 13 steals and outrebounded the visitors 59-42.

UAA led from start to finish, jumping to a 10-2 advantage in the first five minutes and taking a 37-30 edge into the halftime break. The Falcons slowly sliced into their deficit but could never tie or take the lead. Benson sank a short jumper at the 5:35 mark to make it a 60-58 UAA lead, however Alli Madison answered with a fastbreak layup, and KeKe Wright converted a putback to spark a 14-0 Seawolf run and seal the victory.

Alli Madison's 21 points tied her career-high as the Seattle (Kennedy HS) product shot 11 of 12 from the free-throw line, along with eight rebounds, four assists and no turnovers. Meanwhile, Craft had her second straight big performance off the bench, grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds and adding 10 points, mostly on rebound putbacks.

Freshman guard Kiki Robertson had seven points (7-11 FT), nine rebounds, four assists and four steals, and senior forward Kylie Burns added eight points and six boards, including five on the offensive end.

The victory marked UAA's first over a top 10-ranked team under second-year head coach Ryan McCarthy.

UAA returns to action with its final non-conference games Dec. 20-21 when it hosts the annual AT&T Hoops Classic at the WFSC. The Seawolves will play Cameron (Okla.) in the first round, with the other opening matchup featuring Brevard (N.C.) and St. Leo (Fla.).

NOTES: The Seawolves have now won six of the last seven against the Falcons, and five straight in Anchorage … the victory cut SPU's lead to 34-20 in the overall series, which dates to the 1979-80 season … UAA's only loss this season remains against Div. I Georgetown … UAA extended its regular-season win streak against fellow Div. II teams to 13 games, including the last seven contests in last winter … Burns rose to 24th place on UAA's career rebounding list (355) and moved alone into seventh place with her 77th victory in a Seawolf uniform.
