Seawolves blitz Wildcats for key win

ANCHORAGE – Junior guard Kyle Fossman scored 26 points and senior forward Abebe Demissie tied his career high with 18 points Thursday as Alaska Anchorage emerged with a decisive 98-69 victory over Central Washington in a key Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball contest at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (13-5, 6-4 GNAC) also got 18 points from sophomore wing Teancum Stafford as they avenged a Jan. 5 loss to the Wildcats in Washington and moved one game ahead of them in the league standings. UAA remains tied for third place with Alaska Fairbanks.

The Wildcats (11-7, 5-5) was led by 20 points from guard Mark McLaughlin, while Nate Walker came off the bench with 11 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Despite the final score, the game was a one-possession affair for the first 13 minutes. The Seawolves took control with a 12-1 run that made it 34-22, and led 49-37 at the halftime.

CWU sliced its deficit to 53-46 on McLaughlin's layup with 16:20 remaining, but the visitors from Ellensburg would get no closer as UAA slowly stretched its lead.

Fossman shot 8 of 15 overall and 4 of 6 from long range – along with a career-high-tying nine rebounds – as UAA shot 55.2 percent from the field and a season-high 56.5 percent (13 of 23) on three-pointers, racking up 27 assists on 32 made baskets.

Stafford shot 7 of 12 (4-6 3FG), Demissie was 6 of 8 (3-5 3FG) and reserve center Chris Weitzel made all four of his attempts for a season-high eight points.

The Seawolves also got big nights from freshman point guard Jalen Little (9 points, career-high-tying 9 assists), freshman forward Christian Leckband (9 points, 2 assists, 0 turnovers) and senior center Liam Gibcus (8 points, 6 rebounds).

UAA returns to action Saturday when it hosts Northwest Nazarene at 7 p.m. at the WFSC.
