UAA tests #13 SFU in 60-52 defeat

BURNABY, British Columbia (Jan. 31) – Led by a double-double from senior Alysa Horn, the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team put a scare into 13th-ranked Simon Fraser on Thursday night before falling 60-52 at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (10-8, 4-6 GNAC) got 10 points and 11 rebounds from Horn and a team-high 14 points from senior point guard Sasha King, who returned after missing the last four games with an ankle sprain.

The Clan (15-3, 8-2) used a 20-point effort from guard Erin Chambers and 17 rebounds from senior center Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe as they swept the regular-season series for the first time and snapped UAA's three-game road win streak.

UAA led 30-28 at halftime and the lead went back and forth throughout the second half. King gave the Seawolves their final advantage at 49-48 with 3 minutes left when she knocked down a pair of free throws, however she fouled out on the ensuing SFU possession.

Tied 49-49, Chambers hit a three-pointer, which was quickly answered by Jessica Madison at the 1:55 mark. UAA would not score again though, as the Canadians ended the game with an 8-0 run.

Junior forward Kylie Burns scored 12 of her 13 points in the first half and added eight rebounds and three steals, while Horn made four steals. Alli Madison finished with eight points and three rebounds as she, Horn and Burns combined to play 118 of a possible 120 minutes.

The Seawolves conclude their four-game road swing Saturday when they travel south to Bellingham, Wash., to face 5th-ranked and league-leading Western Washington at 4:15 p.m. AST.
