Seawolves stuff SMU for GNAC berth

ANCHORAGE – Senior point guard Sasha King had 16 points and nine assists to lead a balanced attack Thursday as the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team won its fifth straight game with a 76-58 decision over Saint Martin's at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (15-9, 9-7 GNAC) also got 13 points and 11 rebounds from senior forward Alysa Horn to move into fifth place in the league standings and secure a spot in the upcoming Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Saints (12-13, 5-10) were led by a game-high 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting from forward Chelsey Haskey, but the visitors from Lacey, Wash., committed 23 turnovers and had no other player score more than six points.

After trailing 4-3 early, the Seawolves took the lead for good on consecutive three-pointers by freshman Alyssa Hutchins. Fellow rookie Jenna Buchanan nailed one of her three treys to make it 19-8 at the 10:42 mark, and the Seawolves' advantage stayed at double digits throughout.

UAA led 42-21 at the break and stretched its lead to 29 points on two occasions in the second half.

All seven of the Seawolves' regulars scored at least six points, including 13 for senior Jordan Martin, who equaled her career-best in a conference game. Redshirt freshman guard Jessica Madison added 10 points and tied her career-high with three steals, while junior Kylie Burns and Buchanan tallied 9 points apiece.

King, coming off a record-setting 9-of-10 three-point performance in Saturday's road upset of Northwest Nazarene, had only two treys but shot 7 of 12 from the floor, along with four steals. The Oklahoma native came just one assist shy of her fifth career double-digit output.

Horn, meanwhile, tallied her second straight double-double and seventh this season as she passed a pair of career milestones with her 600th rebound and 50th blocked shot. The 5th-year senior from Kodiak is now one of just five players in program history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 50 blocks, joining Robin Graul (1985-89), Rebecca Kielpinski (2005-09), Cheryl Bishop (1982-87) and former teammate Hanna Johansson (2008-12).

With Thursday's victory, the Seawolves can finish no worse than sixth in the final league standings, meaning they clinch a chance to defend their consecutive titles in the 3rd annual GNAC Tournament, Mar. 6-9 in Lacey.

UAA sits a half-game ahead of idle Seattle Pacific (14-9, 8-7) for fifth place as they head into Saturday's home finale against Western Oregon (5:15 p.m. AST).
